چکیده

We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong Mg II absorption than quasar sight lines. We give further evidence that this observed difference is not due to intervening dust extinction that would cause selection effects in the quasar sample. Instead, we propose that the difference is due to the different beam sizes of GRBs and quasars — that quasar beam sizes are, on average, about twice that of GRBs, and that the intervening Mg II systems are of a similar size, i.e. . 10 cm. We also discuss some observational predictions of our proposed model. Most notably, in some cases the intervening Mg II absorbers in GRB spectra should be seen evolving, and quasars with smaller sizes should show an increased rate of Mg II absorbers. Explaining Disparate Absorption Statistics towards Quasars and Gamma-ray Bursts with Patchy Mg Ii Absorbers

We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong Mg II absorption than quasar sight lines. We give additional evidence that this observed difference is not due to intervening dust extinction that would result in adverse selection effects in the quasar sample. Instead, we propose that the discrepancy is due to the diffe...

Disparate Mg II Absorption Statistics Towards Quasars and Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Possible Explanation

We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong Mg II absorption than quasar sight lines. We propose that the discrepancy is due to the different beam sizes of GRBs and quasars, and that the intervening Mg II systems are clumpy with the dense part of each cloudlet of a similar size as the quasars, i.e. . 10 cm, but bi...

A Bayesian likelihood analysis is used to constrain the redshift of the optical transient associated with gamma-ray burst 970508, under the assumption that the absorption at redshift 0.835 is not physically associated with the transient. The maximum-likelihood, expectation value and 95-percent upper limit on the OT redshift are 0.835, 1.3 and 1.9 respectively. Subject headings: methods: statist...

Gamma-ray Bursts versus Quasars: Lyman-α Signatures of Reionization versus Cosmological Infall

Lyman-α absorption is a prominent cosmological tool for probing both galactic halos and the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We consider a variety of sources that can be used as the Lyman-α emitters for this purpose. Among these sources, we argue that quasars are the best probes of the evolution of massive halos, while γ-ray bursts represent the cleanest sources for studying the reionizat...

Gamma-Ray Bursts from Radio-Quiet Quasars

We study positional coincidences between gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE 3B catalogue and quasars/AGN taken from the Véron-Cetty & Véron compilation. For most classes of AGN, for BL Lac objects and for radio-loud quasars, we find no excess coincidences above random expectation, and we give upper limits for their burst emission rate. However, surprising evidence is found for a positional correlati...
